You Name-Caller! Unusual Character Last Names {WriterlyWednesday}

So, in the last two WriterlyWednesday posts, we covered first name ideas for characters. Today I thought I'd switch things up and list some interesting, unusual LAST names. Some may be slightly bizarre, even.

I don't know why, but for some odd reason I'm drawn to the names which are crazy sounding. Different. Unusual. Peculiar.

Whoever thought last names of characters had to be boring? Last names can be as fun as first names if you let them be.

Here's a short sampling of unusual last names, for your writing pleasure.

What are some of your favorite character last names? Do you like to use different sounding last names or stick to more traditional, 'normal' ones?

Have a blessed Wednesday!

  1. Great last names, Fowler is one I really like. The last surname I used in a WIP was 'Meldrum'

    1. Thanks! Meldrum...that is really cool sounding! Mind if I add it to my names repertoire/collection?

    2. Of course not! Feel honoured by it, go ahead!

  2. Hmm...some of these sound familiar. ;)

    I tend to go for the more "traditional" ones, but that's mostly laziness. :P Sometimes I just come up with them out of thin air, though. Well...except for the fact that the human grain really can't get anything out of thin air.

  3. Nice list. Are these all real names, or ones you made up? I know it took me a while to settle on a name for my main character. What genre do you write? Some genres are better for crazy names than others, it seems.

    1. Thanks for commenting, Deborah. Some of the names I made up, but most I collected from other sources...e.g. films, books, name creator widgets, etc. My primary genre is historical fiction in which crazy names really don't fit very well typically. The craziest sounding name in my Civil War novel? Coon. Which isn't what I'd call 'crazy'. However, in my dystopian works, I like to use a ton of crazy names.
